PT Bukit Makmur Mandiri Utama (BUMA), the principal subsidiary of PT BUMA Internasional Grup Tbk (IDX: DOID), has reaffirmed its commitment to equipping Indonesia’s younger generation with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the workforce, as it marked the completion of the BUMA School program for the 2025/2026 academic year. To mark the conclusion of this year’s program, BUMA held a closing event attended in person by 10 school principals and 10 teachers responsible for coordinating BUMA School from partner schools. The event also featured a workshop and soft skills session on Continuous Improvement.
BUMA School is designed to develop not only technical competencies but also the broader skills and attributes students need to succeed in the workplace. The program takes a comprehensive approach, beginning with student selection and continuing through technical training, soft skills development, mental and physical conditioning (Bintalsik), use of a Learning Management System (LMS), industry placements (PRAKERIN), and competency certification. Together, these elements aim to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the practical demands of the workplace.
During the 2025/2026 academic year, BUMA School welcomed 200 students from 10 vocational high schools (SMKs) across West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi. All participants successfully completed the program and earned Basic Mechanic Course certification. Of these, 170 students also obtained competency certification for mechanics from Indonesia’s National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP).. In addition, 20 students completed industry placements at the BUMA Rebuild Center in Balikpapan. These achievements reflect BUMA's ongoing efforts to better prepare vocational students for employment after graduation.
Dian Sofia Andyasuri, President Director of BUMA, said that BUMA School reflects the company's long-term commitment to preparing young Indonesians for the job market. "With more than two decades of experience in the mining industry, we understand that workforce readiness goes beyond technical skills. It also requires discipline, adaptability, teamwork, and an understanding of professional work ethics. Through BUMA School, we want to bring this knowledge and experience closer to students while they are still in vocational school, ensuring that what they learn at school is increasingly aligned with the skills and standards required to enter the workforce," Dian stated.
BUMA leads BUMA School as the program owner, while PT BISA Ruang Nuswantara (BIRU), a subsidiary and the social arm of BUMA International Group, serves as the implementing partner, supporting learning activities and participants' competency development. This direct connection to the industry is one of the program's key strengths. Its curriculum and learning activities are designed to give students practical exposure to workplace expectations, from safety and discipline to technical competencies and professional work culture.
Mardin Umar, Head of the Light Vehicle Engineering Automotive Department and BUMA School Coordinator at SMKN 5 Sidrap, highlighted how the program has helped bring vocational education closer to industry needs. "BUMA School has made a profound impact on our school. Through the program, students gain access to learning experiences that are more closely aligned with industry requirements, while the school has an opportunity to improve the quality and competitiveness of its vocational education. BUMA School has also strengthened public confidence in our school and helped establish SMKN 5 Sidrap as one of the leading choices for vocational education in the region," Mardin said.
Since its launch in 2018, BUMA School has continued to grow into one of BUMA's flagship initiatives aimed at strengthening vocational education in Indonesia. To date, the program has reached 2,236 students, engaged and enhanced the capabilities of 32 teachers, and partnered with 16 vocational high schools across seven provinces. Beyond supporting students, the program also strengthens the capacity of schools and educators, enabling a wider and lasting impact through transfer of industry knowledge and practices.
Oktavian Dwi S, a BUMA School alumnus who currently works as a mechanic at BUMA, shared how the program helped prepare him for his career. "Joining BUMA School was an important stepping stone in my career journey. The program not only strengthened my technical skills but also gave me the confidence to enter the workforce through direct learning from industry professionals. The experience has built a strong foundation in discipline, team collaboration, safety standards, and work procedures, which have helped me to quickly adapt in professional workplaces," Oktavian said.
The program's impact extends well beyond graduation. To date, more than 400 BUMA School alumni have secured employment at BUMA and other companies, demonstrating how collaboration between education and industry can help improve workforce readiness among vocational graduates.
This year, BUMA further reinforced its commitment to the program by signing MoUs with four vocational high schools: SMK Negeri 1 Balikpapan, SMK Negeri 1 Singosari, SMK Swasta Warga Solo, and SMK Swasta Tabalong. These schools will serve as BUMA School partners for the 2026/2027 academic year. The agreements were signed by members of BUMA's Board of Directors and representatives of the respective schools, reaffirming BUMA's ongoing commitment to developing Indonesia's next generation and communities around its operational areas, while further aligning vocational education with industry needs.
"We want BUMA School to continue growing and providing a broader impact, so that more young Indonesians graduate not only with a diploma, but also with the competence, character, and readiness to build their careers," Dian concluded.
